Rory O'Connell & Boyd Peters

Voice in the Reeds

A performance that marries together the earthy and ancient tones of the reeds in the Uilleann pipes with the spoken word in the form of poetry and soothing voice of the Irish wooden flute

Voice in the reeds, poster Local musicians Boyd Peters, originally from County Derry in Ulster but living in Morayshire for the past 20 years, and Rory O'Connell, Irish American who has lived in Forres for most of his adult life, have been playing Irish music together for many years. They play locally at ceilidhs and sessions and have been influential on the local music scene, bringing irish traditional music to Moray and Highland region. They each play whistles and wooden flutes, as well as the Uilleann pipes.

The Uilleann pipes is an instrument traditional to Ireland and not commonly seen in Scotland. This is a special occasion to hear the Irish Uilleann pipes up close, and to meet the musicians informally.

As well as their love of the sound of the pipes, they both have a passion for Irish poetry, and particularly the poetry of Seamus Heaney, which they will share with the audience. Heaney is a well known and loved poet from County Derry who, in 1995, won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
